This past year as my folks have been trying to “go green” at their home, they decided to install a pond in the backyard after reading some articles on the environmental benefits of a pond. Well they didnt know what they were getting into. While they truly love it, it has been far more work than what they thought and because they dont have any local pond shops to lean on, they rely on the internet for tips and advice. What we have come to realize is that they undersized their filter system. As they (and I) have been reading, we found out that we are not cycling enough water per hour. Rule of thumb is the pond pump should circulate the whole pond per hour at the min, well they are probably only doing 3/4. Also it appears an external filter would be a better option due to the size of their pond…one that offers all the various types of filtration in one unit. So while shopping for pond filters I come across some great end of season sales, so I was able to get them a great OASE filter system, complete with pond pump and at great price. I think they will really love it and best of all never expect it.
